My Lakota name is Ista Yamni, which is Lakota for Three Eyes, two on my face and one in my heart. I am of German, Cherokee and Lakota blood born and raised in Wyoming. My wife, of 22 years is German. Cherokee and Lakota as well. We both walk the Red Road, the Way of Life of the Lakota. I make the Sacred CaNnuNpa (peace pipes) and my wife and I are both Pipe Carriers. We go to the Sweat Lodge (Inipi), and pray with our pipes. My wife does bead work. We give these back to the "people" as we are moved to do so by the Creator (God). We are learning the Lakota Language, and find this way of life very rewarding. We have many Native American friends and teachers of the old ways. We have four children one son, two daughters , a adopted son, and four grandchildren. We have two black miniture poodles. Living in Wyoming we have a life style we both love lots of wide open spaces, mountains and fresh air. Our home serves as a hub for many friends passing through. My Grandparents came to Wyoming in a covered wagon in the early ninteen hundreds. They told me stories of how they lived in those days and they were very tough people, they had to be. When they got here they homesteaded some land near Manville Wyoming and dug a hole, covered it with wood and with three children lived there for six years. After that they did build a tar paper shack and as time passed got a real house. To my way of thinking as I sit in my home with central heat and air, that is tough !
